How Many Paintballs Come In A Case And What's The Cost?

Generally paintballs come in 50 - 2000 rounds in a case.  Most companies usually sell cases by 500, 1000, and 2000 lot.  Depending on how trigger happy you are, you could easily fire 1000 rounds in a day. Prices can vary from $20 (usually practice paint) to $100 for high quality paintballs.

How To Store And Take Care Of Your Paintballs

This guy from Expert Village explains...

PaintballsPaintballs are very susceptible to heat, and moisture.  When it's hot the paintball can swell up and start to deform.  That's why it is important that you keep your paintballs sealed at room temperature or in a cool dry place away from the sun.  Carry an icepack in your gearbag or put your paintballs in a cooler when you head out to the field, ok? OK!

Note: Do not in any circumstance freeze paintballs, they can seriously injure someone.

A paintball has no minimum weight requirement, but a paintball shouldn't weigh more than 3.4 grams, this is in accordance with the ASTM (The American Society for Testing and Materials).

"Alpha team just flanked the enemy and bought us some time.. so listen up soldier!"

What Makes A Good Quality Paintball?

Why does this matter you ask? Well, in a nutshell, a bad paintball will break in your barrel, or won't split open on your target.  So it's essential that you seek a good company that produces high quality paintballs.

PaintballsMore often than not the higher the price the better the paintball.  With a more expensive paintball,  the manufacturing process is carefully monitored and very rigorous standards are adhered to.  Here's what you can expect from these tight constricted standards...

  • Nice size (.68, always good.)
  • Sweet shape (sphere AKA round....umm)
  • Highest quality fills (refers to the paint filled within the capsule)
  • Thinner shells (helps to maximize breaking, instead of bouncing, resulting in far more eliminations *cough* that's good for you *cough*)

Proper size and shape of the paintball is imperative for accuracy.  This also helps when the paintball comes in contact with a player, because it breaks on impact instead of bouncing.

How Paintballs Are Made..

This video clearly explains how paintballs are made. Check it out!

The Anatomy Of A Paintball

Paintballs are the projectiles that discharge from your Paintball Marker.  This is pretty shocking so brace yourself... are you ready for it? You sure you're ready for it? ok, here goes....  Paintballs blast out of your marker at 300 fps (feet per second) that's, 200 mph!  Isn't that insane?

The rule of thumb here is that no paintball gun should fire faster than 300 fps, but just to be on the Paintballssafe side, most, if not all paintball fields will require you to measure the speed using a chronograph.  A Chronograph measures the velocity of a paintball as it leaves the barrel. Players that don't use a chronograph before playing risk seriously injuring another player.  This is actually frowned upon in the paintball community and surely not acceptable.

As a general rule 285 fps is what your paintball gun should be clocked at, that way there's some leeway.  The reason for the speed being at or around 285 fps is because paintball masks are only meant to withstand a paintball flying at 300 fps (of course it's a little higher than this, but this is for your own safety).

When you hit or tag a player and it breaks, that player is eliminated from the game, (you see why Paintballs are important?)   Here's a quick breakdown of a paintball...

Paintballs...

  • are non toxic
  • are biodegradable
  • come in a variety of different colors (dye)
  • are thin-skinned capsules, spherical in shape
  • contain gelatin, that consist mainly of polyethylene glycol
  • are water soluble so they wash off clothes and skin with just soap and water

    In summary, Paintballs are Safe

Paintballs Breaking?

This guy is insane...

Not All Paintballs Are Created Equal!

Paintballs vary slightly in sizes from .67 to .71 caliber, but generally they're produced at a .68 caliber, that's roughly the size of a small marble.  Manufacturers must make sure that the barrel diameter is larger than the paintball itself, this way the paintball can smoothly exit the barrel.

A wise man once said...

"Not All Paintballs Are Created Equal"

Just because you end up buying a blue colored paintball, doesn't mean that the dye inside the shell will be blue.  Also every paintball is not going to be round, solid or durable.

"Alpha team just got eliminated soldier, quick, move up the line and find some ammo"

Can I Eat A Paintball And Live?

Yes you can eat a paintball and live, because they are non-toxic and water based. But why would you eat one? (silly wabbit).

This guy tried out 9 different kinds of paintballs, please don't try this...

Reusable Balls

Reusable PaintballsA reusable ball is a paintball that has no paint inside of it. These types of balls come in rubber or velcro.  The intended purpose of this was to offer players and teams a cheaper alternative for practice.  They were also produced for indoor paintball arena's, because real paintballs make a big mess (some indoor paintball places still play with real paint).

Reusable balls weigh much less than there counterpart, but are roughly the same size.  They tend to be more costly, but this is only because you can reuse them over and over again, definitely saving you money in the end.

Types Of Balls..

  • V-Ball Target Systems
  • Rufus Dawg Reusable Paintballs
Reusable balls are shot at a lower velocity than normal paintballs.  Because normal paintballs break on contact and limit the pain you feel, reusable balls have to be shot at a lower speed (because were not playing protesters and riot cops here).

Note: Do not reuse real paintballs off the ground (unless of course you just dove into a bunker and your pod busted wide open), they are probably weakened from moisture and or temperature. These can plug up your barrel or even mess up the internal mechanisms of your marker.

Paintballs For The Cold...What!?

PaintballsPlaying paintball in the cold, are you serious? Brrrrr..  You can choose a type of paintball for serious cold conditions, though this is more for the hardcore type of player (certainly not me, I'll take my hot chocolate thank you very much!).

They're what you call Winter Fill Paintballs  in that they are specifically designed for super cold conditions like that of Alaska or even the Northern Part of Canada (yes I'm sure it gets cold where you live too, but I can't name everywhere in the world where it's cold).

These paintballs have a much tougher shell and have less water filling,  this is to prevent getting the biggest and most painful welts paintballs can dish out.  So if you're super hardcore, I'd contemplate getting these bad boyz (yes that's boys with a "z").

Does It Hurt?

HaHaHa

Do you want the short or long answer? The short answer to this question is YES!  The long answer is HECK YES!  When you get tagged by a paintball traveling at over 200 mph, it's going to cause some discomfort (to say the very least).

PaintballsRemember gym class in school?  The big guy that always whipped you with a wet towel?  That's the sensation of being hit by a paintball (I will get my revenge dude).  At first it stings pretty bad, but that only lasts mere seconds and you're left with a welt (don't worry, you can show off your battle wounds to the ladies later, hot shot)

Some shots, although it's rare, can really tear up the skin, but this is only because some players don't wear the proper Paintball Gear.

Now don't let this deter you from actually playing paintball. This is what makes Paintball the 3rd most extreme sport in the world today. If you can't take a little pain then you should go back to playing laser tag with your computer buddies.

Don't Try This At Home!

This guy decides to take a bunch of paintballs to the body, is he crazy? You decide...

"You've run out of time soldier, the enemy has taken you out and you didn't restock up on ammo, better luck next time"
