~ Gearing Up ~
It's a common misconception that you need to be geared to the gills to even consider taking part in the tournament scene.
You don't need to drop $2000 on gear
and Paintball Supplies just to get started, but you do need to cover the basics, and make sure your equipment is functional and reliable.

2009 ~ PMR (Proto Matrix Rail)

Find a Paint ball Gun in your price range, get comfortable with it, and find out what its weaker points are,
you can read up on some
Paintball Gun
Reviews. Boost those with aftermarket parts, and you've got yourself a budget marker that can do anything you ask of it.
Be sure to check that the marker's modes of fire conform to tournament standards.

My Recommended Starter Paintball Masks

It's common sense, but make sure you have a decent
Paintball Mask. You want a mask with good coverage, and you need to make sure it is well ventilated enough that you stay cool and comfortable and don't fog up the lens.
Thermal lenses are a big plus, and are borderline necessary for tournament play. To learn more about what kind of gear you will need, check out

Watching videos of pro teams on the field will give you a good idea of the various roles that players take, and can help you get a better understanding of the group dynamic.
You can also get some sense of which role may fit your style of play the best, and try taking up that position the next time you get on the field. If you're looking to watch the pro teams in action check out some cool
Paintball DVD's.
~ Networking is Everything ~
The most crucial part of getting into the tournament scene, above and beyond gear and skill, is networking.
Get to know the paintball crowd in your area. Make friends with the players and visit the shops regularly.
Get friendly with the owners of the local fields.
The more people who know how dedicated you are to the sport, the better your chances of being picked up by a local team.
Try not to forget that at the end of the day, paintball is a game, and people play games to have fun.
Be a good sport,
win and lose gracefully, and don't get too pushy when offering constructive criticism to your fellow players. Ultimately, it doesn't matter how good you are if no one wants to play with you.
~ Congratulations! ~
That's it. You've taken your first step into the world of tournament paintball, and you're equipped with the knowledge you need to get started.
What are you waiting for? Get out there and rip it up!
